A busy Cobb County road reopened Thursday afternoon, hours after a storm drain collapsed and created a large hole.
Crews with the Georgia Department of Transportation began repair work on Austell Road outside Milford Elementary at about 10 p.m. Wednesday, and lane closures continued through the night and into the next day, according to Cobb officials. The northbound lanes of Austell Road were closed between Callaway and Windy Hill roads while repairs were underway Thursday.
A detour was in place at Callaway Road that diverted drivers onto Al Bishop Drive and County Services Parkway before reconnecting them to Austell Road. Cobb transportation officials also adjusted signal timing in the area to help facilitate traffic flow, according to a county spokesperson.
The road reopened around 4:45 p.m. Thursday.
Despite the road closure, a Cobb County School District spokesperson said there were no disruptions at Milford Elementary.
“Families are aware of the traffic issue thanks to a call out from the school,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “There were no issues during morning drop-off, and the school does not anticipate any during afternoon dismissal. It is another great day for teaching and learning at Milford Elementary School.”
