WEDNESDAY’S WEATHER-TRAFFIC: Scattered showers possible as heat rises

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan has your forecast

There could be a few scattered showers in store Wednesday, but much of metro Atlanta will stay dry, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Humidity is on the rise Wednesday, and rain chances and temperatures are coming up with it. There is a 20% chance of showers this afternoon, but Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said all of North Georgia will be warm.

“Temperatures are going to be up near 90 degrees this afternoon across North Georgia,” he said. “I think some of us could hit it later on today.”

The projected high for metro Atlanta is 88 degrees.

Wednesday kicks off a pattern of heat, humidity and afternoon showers and storms that will carry North Georgia through the end of the week. Monahan said most are likely to see some rain activity, but the amount of rainfall will be slight.

“Between now and the end of the week, we could see a few spots with just a half-inch of rain,” he said. “Most of us will just see some light scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms the next couple of days.”

There is no rain to worry about Wednesday morning, he said, and it is warm to begin the day with temperatures in the upper 60s and low 70s. Atlanta should reach the 80s by noon, according to Channel 2.

Monahan said Wednesday will see the most sunshine with 12 of the 14 hours of daylight likely to be rain-free. The amount of sunshine drops Thursday and Friday with 40% rain chances, he said.

By the end of the weekend, North Georgia could be feeling the effects of Tropical Storm Cristobal moving closer to the Gulf Coast. Monahan said Georgia is unlikely to see any direct effects from the storm, but it could send tropical moisture this way as fuel for more rain.

Volume remains lighter than normal Wednesday morning on metro Atlanta interstates, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

“It’s not bad out there. That’s the good news,” traffic reporter Mark Arum said at 6 a.m. “Any interstate you want to take is delay-free.”

That includes the Downtown Connector, which was moving smoothly in both directions to begin the Wednesday morning rush, the Traffic Center reported.
