Stuck out-of-service train shuts down Airport MARTA station

[11:20 p.m.]: It will take hours to move the out-of-service disabled train off the MARTA tracks north of the Airport station, which has shut down service to and from the station Tuesday night, MARTA spokeswoman Stephany Fisher said.

The bus bridge service set up between the Airport and College Park stations will continue until “probably after 2 a.m.” Wednesday morning, but Fisher said normal service should resume later in the morning.

UPDATE [10:30 p.m.]: MARTA spokeswoman Stephany Fisher told AJC.com an out-of-service train is stuck on the MARTA tracks north of the Airport station, shutting down service to and from the station Tuesday night.

She said the operator is the only person on board the stuck train. A bus bridge has been established from the Airport station to the College Park station, and northbound service is still active from the College Park station, she said.

She wasn’t able to provide an estimated time for the stuck train’s clearance or when service will restart from the Airport station.

ORIGINAL STORY: Despite the sun coming out Tuesday for the first time in what feels like ages, temperatures remained in the mid-40s in the afternoon and are preparing to drop back near freezing overnight.

As a result, the city of Atlanta will open an emergency warming center at 10 p.m. at the Old Adamsville Recreation Center at 3404 Delmar Lane. The center will be open until Wednesday morning.

It’s expected to be 34 degrees by 11 p.m., according to Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Glenn Burns.

The near-average conditions come ahead of a temperature drop expected Sunday, when the high is forecast to be about 40 degrees.

But at least it’s not expected to rain until Thursday.

Traffic had its trouble spots during the evening commute, but it was nowhere near as bad on the roads as it was this morning.

The woes started about 4:30 a.m.

A tractor-trailer, which was hauling 40,000 pounds of frozen chicken, caught fire in the tunnel under the fifth runway at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

The fire was doused before crews shut down eastbound lanes of I-285 past Riverdale Road, but lanes did not start reopening until about 6:15 a.m. The driver was not injured.

On the Northside, a large car fire on I-75 North past South Marietta Parkway had multiple right lanes blocked at times, causing major delays Tuesday morning.

And if that wasn’t enough, a crash on I-20 West just past Wesley Chapel Road led to bad backups in DeKalb County, the Traffic Center reported. The trip time from Turner Hill Road to I-285 exceeded 30 minutes at one point.
