While a few slow spots remain, traffic is beginning to die down after Thursday’s evening commute.

The worst delays are in Gwinnett County, where three left lanes of I-85 North are blocked by a crash near Beaver Ruin Road, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

A nearby wreck on the Perimeter in DeKalb County isn’t helping matters. Lanes are beginning to reopen, but a crash blocked all but one outer loop lane at Chamblee Tucker Road, according to the Traffic Center.

A series of isolated storms that hit northwest Georgia has also died down. The storms prompted severe thunderstorm warnings for Walker and Catoosa counties, but those warnings have since expired, according to the National Weather Service.

It was another hot day for North Georgia, Channel 2 Action News reported. Atlanta reached the upper 80s, which Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said is a sign of an upcoming heat wave.

The pattern of isolated afternoon showers and storms and highs near 90 is forecast to continue through the weekend, but Monahan said change is coming for the start of next week.

The projected high Monday is 93 degrees, according to the latest forecast.

“That should tell you something,” Monahan said. “That’s the start of a big warming trend that’s going to take us into the first week of July.”

Rain remains in the forecast each day for the next five days, according to Channel 2, but the chances are not especially high.

“Rain chances over the next few days are kind of bouncing between 20 and 30 percent,” Monahan said. The chance goes down to 20 percent Friday and then up again Saturday, he said.

The forecast is still in flux for the July 4 holiday next Thursday. For now, Monahan said Atlanta looks to be hot and humid but should stay dry for those running in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race.

That’s not to say all Independence Day celebrations will be rain-free, he said. Isolated storms are expected to develop starting in the afternoon, according to Channel 2.
