While all of North Georgia will have to deal with the heat Thursday, fewer will need to worry about afternoon storms.
Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said the region is still dealing with a summertime pattern of afternoon showers and storms, but rain chances are lower Thursday at just 30%.
Like the past few days, wet weather is most likely after lunchtime.
“We're going to see more of that today, just a little less coverage,” Deon said. “Some good news there. You can still keep that umbrella close by, just in case.”
Everyone will be dealing with muggy conditions, however. It will feel pretty sticky through early next week, Deon said.
The humidity could make it feel even hotter outside. Atlanta is headed for a projected high of 90 degrees Thursday, which is about on target for this time of year, according to Channel 2.
“It is July, and it is going to feel like it, so prepare accordingly,” Deon said. “Stay hydrated getting out in the heat.”
Thursday is starting out warm but dry with temperatures in the low 70s. Rain chances bump up to about 10% around noon, but Deon said lunch plans are not likely to be affected.
“We are expecting isolated storms to develop during the afternoon, and some of those could become strong,” she said. “Watching out for some brief, heavy downpours as well as gusty winds with any stronger storms that develop, but up until 1 p.m. it looks like we're going to be on the quiet side.”
Deon said she expects Thursday to be “a mainly quiet day” for most of North Georgia. Rain chances drop even further for the holiday weekend.
“The Fourth of July is not looking too bad, only a 20% chance of rain,” Deon said. “We’re expecting the moisture to return, though, Sunday through early next week.”
Despite a few earlier crashes, metro Atlanta interstates are delay-free Thursday morning, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
Volume could pick up later Thursday as drivers get a jump on the Fourth of July weekend. Ahead of busy holiday travel, the Georgia Department of Transportation is suspending construction-related lane closures beginning at noon.
The restrictions will remain in place through Sunday, according to GDOT.
