This time of year is typically the coldest for North Georgia, but the weather won’t be typical this week.

After a chilly start Monday, the region is leaving behind morning lows in the 20s and 30s for a few days, according to Channel 2 Action News. By Friday afternoon, temperatures are expected to near 70 degrees.

It has been kind of a wild winter so far, Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

“A couple of weeks into winter, we've had high temperatures, we've had a lot of rain,” he said. “We're going to see more of that this week.”

The average low for the start of January is 32 degrees, and the average high is 55. Atlanta’s projected high is 60 degrees Monday, according to Channel 2.

Snow that fell Saturday night in Lumpkin County may be the last winter weather North Georgia sees for a while, Monahan said. It’s out there, but he said it won’t reach Georgia any time soon.

“Temperatures are going to run way above average over the next several days,” he said.

Monday morning is starting out chilly in the 40s for metro Atlanta. Once the sun comes up, Monahan said it will be nearly total sunshine for most of the day.

“As we go through tonight the clouds will thicken up,” he said. “Tomorrow morning, it’s not going to be heavy rain, but there are going to be some light showers around.”

After a wet morning commute, the rain should move out quickly and Monahan said North Georgia will clear out again Tuesday afternoon. The clearing trend will last into the middle of the week, he said.

Another round of heavy rain is in the forecast for this weekend. Monahan said it could cause issues for areas still dealing with the impacts of the last round of storms.

Friday carries a 40% chance of rain, and the chance jumps to 60% for Saturday and Sunday, according to Channel 2.

Most metro Atlanta school districts are back in session Monday after the holiday break, which will mean more congestion on the roads for the morning commute.

The interstates are “calm right now, but we’ll see how this unfolds,” WSB traffic reporter Mark Arum said just before 6 a.m. “Thousands more folks will be on the roads than we saw over the holidays.”
