It may be a new month, but February’s rainy weather still lingers — and it’ll continue through the weekend.
As far as traffic is concerned, the month doesn’t matter. There’s nearly always traffic, and Friday afternoon didn’t disappoint.
Bad delays were spread pretty evenly among Fulton, Cobb and DeKalb counties, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
In Fulton, two left lanes of I-85 North near Ga. 138 were blocked by a wreck.
Construction on the Perimeter’s inner loop near Glenwood Road has ended, but a wreck that blocked a right lane near I-85 isn’t helping delays dissipate in DeKalb, according to the Traffic Center.
Volume on I-75 in Cobb was keeping the interstate slow, especially northbound traffic, the Traffic Center reported.
North Georgia has been wet all day as the first of two expected cold fronts moves through the state, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said. Heavy rain fell to the north, while metro Atlanta saw a few showers during the morning drive.
“It has been soggy, it has been wet and it’s gonna stay wet at times through the weekend as we bring in that really cold air across North Georgia,” he said.
Monahan said it should be dry for your Friday evening plans.
“As the front starts to move by to the south, we'll start to see things dry out a bit,” he said.
The cold front triggering showers Friday is weaker than another cold front building to the north that will bring much colder air to Georgia next week, Monahan said.
An arctic front should move in Sunday, and temperatures are expected to plummet. Atlanta reached and is hovering at 68 degrees, which is the projected high for today. However, it could be freezing by Tuesday morning, according to Channel 2.
While only a few showers are expected Saturday, Monahan said the arctic front could bring strong storms Sunday.
There is a 90 percent chance of widespread heavy rain for the second half of the weekend.
With another 1 to 2 inches of rain possible, there is also a high risk of flooding, according to Channel 2.
“Creeks and streams are just so high, flooding will be a concern through the weekend,” Monahan said. “Downed trees, a moderate risk of that.”
This will make five wet weekends in a row for North Georgia, which has not seen a completely dry weekend since the end of January, Monahan said.
