Several events are planned throughout the metro area to observe the Jewish holiday of Purim.

Hundreds of families are expected to participate in the Family Purim Masquerade Dance Party, which will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta, 5342 Tilly Mill Rd. in Dunwoody.

There will be costume contests, dancing, face painting and a pizza dinner for families. Purim celebrates the salvation of the Jews in ancient Persia from Haman. The plot to kill all the Jewish people was foiled through the efforts of Queen Esther, the wife of the ruler of Persia, and her cousin, Mordecai.

The cost is $5.
