60-second videos arrive on Instagram

At its heart, Instagram is still a place to post heavily filtered photos of life's minutia, but in the years since it was acquired by Facebook, it's been gradually morphing into a more full-fledged home for visuals.

To that end, Instagram says it's seen such a jump in users viewing Instagram videos that it's extending the length of clips you can post to the service, from 15 seconds to a full minute. iOS app users will also be able to edit together separate clips into one video as a new feature. Not all users will be able to post lengthier videos immediately, but Instagram says the new feature will roll out to everyone eventually.

The company says this is just one improvement it's making this year to the service. Another recent change, in which Instagram will begin displaying photos not necessarily in chronological order, has caused a mini-panic among some users afraid of having their photos and videos lost to other users.
