In the third annual Kilometer Kids Charity Chase, team Air Force took first place Monday against its United States military contemporaries.

Richard Elmore, a native of California stationed at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, won finished with the fastest time of 37 minutes, 15 seconds. His team beat out the Marine Corps (second) and the Army (third). The Coast Guard and Navy teams did not participate this year because they did not have enough competitors.

“It is a really big event, and it all comes down to all six people doing a good job pulling together and winning as a team,” Elmore said. “We did it last year, and all of us came back and had a lot more training this year to win as a team.”

Elmore trained for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race for two months with his team. Yet, he said the heat and conditions did play a role in his overall performance.

“It probably slowed everyone down,” he said. “Just the heat and humidity makes it difficult to cool off and run a fast race.”

Elmore’s teammates finished with respectable times as well. Corey Blackburn finished in 43:41, and Cassandra Vandermay crossed the finish line at 51:10.

Marine Corps member Korin McClendon finished third among the military branches with a time of 48:45.

Team Air Force’s win will help the Kilometer Kids Charity get proceeds to help create programs in Atlanta that encourages health and fitness for the youth.
