José Mota, longtime coach in Braves’ organization, dies

Longtime Braves minor-league coach José Mota, 53, has died.

Mota, a coach for the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers, died suddenly Tuesday night in the Dominican Republic.

Mota spent four seasons in Gwinnett (2014, 2016-18) and 22 seasons as a coach in the Braves’ minor-league system.

Mota served as a coach with Advanced-A Carolina (2015), rookie-level Danville (2014) and Single-A Rome (2013), as well as several seasons with the Braves’ Dominican Summer League affiliate.

He played two seasons in the Braves system in 1985-86, batting .203 (65 for 320) over 113 games.

A native of San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic, Mota was married and had four children.

“We offer our deepest condolences to José’s family and friends,” the Stripers said in a statement.
