Most metro Atlanta football state champions since 1970

Metro Atlanta has four state champions in high school football for the first time since 1970.

Brookwood, Chattahoochee, Sandy Creek and Buford won state titles in the four highest classifications last weekend at the Georgia Dome and were ranked No. 1 in the final rankings. Clinch County, a Class A team on the Florida border, was the lone champion from outside of the metro area.

Forty years ago, Lakeside, Woodward Academy, Roswell and Lovett were champions from metro Atlanta. As recently as 2005, there were no metro champions.

Brookwood captured its second state title in school history, the other coming in 1996. Chattahoochee won its first and Sandy Creek won for the second year in a row. Buford joined West Rome (1982-85) as the only schools to win four consecutive state championships.
