The Landmark Christian boys soccer team already has set the school record for victories in a season and it will return from spring break next week just three wins short of its first undefeated regular season.
Landmark, which only had its first winning season last year (8-5) after going 10-26-1 in its first four seasons, is 10-0 overall and 4-0 in Area 7-AA/A. The War Eagles host Mount Pisgah on Tuesday and travel to St. Francis on Thursday before finishing at Our Lady of Mercy on April 20 in a game that will likely determine the regular-season area champion. Landmark already has clinched the second state playoff berth in school history.
Justin Clagette, a Presbyterian signee, has been leading the way. He has 28 goals in 10 games and scored a single-game school record six goals in a 6-4 victory against Class AAAAA Creekside earlier this season. Clagette has scored 66 career goals, also a Landmark record.
"Justin is fantastic," Landmark coach Daniel Wesche said. "He's one of those special players who can change a game at any moment. He has a lot of skill and is playing with a lot of confidence at the moment. Even though he's received a lot of attention this year, he's been quick to point out that it takes a full 11 to be successful."
Midfielder Coleman Vivian, who will play for the U.S. Air Force Academy, has added three goals. The defense, led by goalkeeper Seth Cochran and central defenders Garrison Adams and Caleb Peacock, has recorded four shutouts and allowed just 10 goals.
“[Peacock] accepted the role of center back at the start of the year and has done a remarkable job,” Wesche said. “This is a kid who is a four-year starter, played in the midfield the last two years and led our team in scoring as a forward his freshman year. He just quietly goes along and does his job without all the fanfare and prestige. He’s been a fantastic example of self-sacrifice for the good of the team. As he told me a couple of days ago, ‘I like scoring goals, but I like winning more.’”
Red-hot Redguard
Rishaun Redguard, who finished third in DeKalb County last season with 18 goals, is having an even better season in 2010.
The M.L. King senior is DeKalb's leading scorer with 22 goals. Teammate Marah Mondou leads the county in assists with 12 and Tomas Larumbe of Druid Hills leads goalkeepers with a 0.71 goals-against average.
Southwest DeKalb's Khadijah Jannah is the county's girls leader with 23 goals and teammate Kendra Harris leads the assist race with eight. Lakeside's Raleigh Knight leads goalkeepers with a 0.42 goals-against average.
New No. 1s
There were three new No. 1 teams in the Georgia High School Soccer Coaches poll this week. The Collins Hill boys returned to No. 1 in Class AAAAA after Walton lost to Milton 2-0 last week. Walton dropped to No. 2. In Class AAAA, McIntosh is the new No. 1 after beating previous No.1 Starr’s Mill, which fell to No. 4. Class AAAAA also got a new No. 1 girls team as Parkview fell to No. 2 after a 5-4 loss to Greater Atlanta Christian. Walton moved up one place to claim the top spot.
