Class AA blog: What to watch in Week 6

Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets at Brooks County Trojans
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Veterans Stadium, Quitman
Records, rankings: Thomas County Central is 4-0 and unranked in AAAAA; Brooks County is 1-3 and No. 7
Last meeting: Thomas County Central won 24-14 in 2018
Maxwell's projection: Brooks County by 2
Notes: Last year's meeting was the first since 1983 between the two schools located 30 miles apart. In that game, the Trojans rallied from a 17-0 first-quarter hole to pull within 17-14 late in the fourth. The Yellow Jackets are 4-0 for the first time since 2016, with wins over Early County, Thomasville, Cook and Monroe — all unranked opponents. They are led by junior quarterback Kalique Guyton, who has thrown for 636 yards and eight touchdowns to eight interceptions on 47-of-84 passing, while rushing for 146 yards on 22 carries. Junior Tykeem Wallace has a team-high 270 rushing yards and four touchdowns on just eight carries. The Trojans hold firm at No. 7 despite a three-game losing streak, because all defeats were against ranked opponents: A-Public's No. 1 Clinch County, AAAAA's No. 1 Bainbridge and No. 4 Dublin. The Trojans are primarily a run team, with 934 yards on the ground to 535 in the air. Junior quarterback Ni'Tavion Burrus is 36-for-67 for 482 yards and five touchdowns to four interceptions. He and Devin Edwards both have 184 yards on 31 carries, with Edwards rushing for six touchdowns to Burrus' two. Sophomore Omari Arnold leads the team with 460 yards on 50 carries, adding five touchdowns.
Berrien Rebels at Brantley County Blue Herons
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Caney Bay Stadium, Nahunta
Records, rankings: Berrien is 2-2 and unranked; Brantley County is 2-1 and unranked in AAA.
Last meeting: Berrien won 19-6 in 2018.
Maxwell's projection: Even
Notes: The host Rebels won last year's game by two scores despite turning the ball over six times, with receiver Ja'Marquis Johnson accounting for all three of their touchdowns. This year, it's Berrien's turn to make the 1-hour, 30-minute drive, but Johnson is back for his senior year and starting at quarterback for the run-first team. While he's 10-for-19 passing for 123 yards and two touchdowns to one interception, he leads the team in rushing with 349 yards on 34 carries, adding three touchdowns. He's a three-star recruit with nine offers, including Florida State, Georgia Tech, Kentucky and Michigan State. Senior Gerrick Johnson has 316 yards and a team-high seven touchdowns on 32 carries. The Blue Herons have already matched their win total from last season under second-year coach Geoff Cannon, and are eyeing their first winning season since 2016. They last reached the playoffs in 2006, and they started 2-0 for the first time since 2009. They're coming off a bye that follows a narrow 7-0 defeat to Jeff Davis on Sept. 13. Like the Rebels, the Herons are a run-first team, with 688 yards on the ground to 125 in the air. They're led by senior Clifford Ratten's 35 carries for 176 yards, followed by Jamel Smith (22-139), Bradson Bowers (17-114) and Gavin King (21-103). Anthonie Lattany has a team-high three rushing touchdowns. All are seniors except for King, who is a junior.
Metter Tigers at Toombs County Bulldogs
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Booster Stadium, Lyons
Records, rankings: Toombs County is 3-0 and unranked; Metter is 3-1 and unranked.
Last meeting: Toombs County won 20-17 in 2018.
Maxwell's projection: Toombs County by 1
Notes: This region opener for both teams essentially decided the fourth and final playoff spot from 2-AA last season, and that could again be the case. In last year's game, the Bulldogs rallied twice to steal the game in overtime on the road. This season, the Bulldogs have run the tables on their non-league opponents, shutting out Twiggs County (14-0) and Hancock Central (24-0), then Claxton 49-31 on Sept. 13 before heading into a bye week. Their Sept. 6 game against Savannah Christian was canceled due to weather. The Bulldogs are led by senior quarterback Trey Cloud, who is 28-of-41 passing for 400 yards and six touchdowns. His top targets are junior Chandler Lynn (138 yards and three touchdowns on seven receptions) and senior Drekari Jones (137 yards, one touchdown, 12 catches). Junior Derrick Mincey leads the ground game with 151 yards and two scores on 18 carries. The Tigers' lone loss came 21-17 to AAA's Island in their opener. They're on a three-game win streak, having beaten Jenkins County (35-7), A-Public's previously-ranked Emanuel County Institute (21-7) and Wilkinson County (42-7).
Correction: An earlier version of this post listed Metter as being the home team.
