Notable results from Week 4: Rockdale County, Columbia break droughts

1. Rockdale County 31, Westside (Macon) 29: Rockdale County pulled off the biggest upset of the week, according to the computer Maxwell Ratings, which had projected Westside as a 28-point favorite. The Bulldogs ended a 13-game losing streak that was tied for the longest in school history. Rockdale was 0-5 during a COVID-shortened 2020 season.

2. Columbia 21, Pace Academy 14: Columbia ended a 19-game losing streak against private schools when it beat four-point favorite Pace Academy in the teams’ Region 6-2A opener. The Eagles had not beaten a private school since a 47-6 victory over St. Pius in 1997. Columbia (2-1 overall) is tied with Towers for second place in the region behind Lovett.

3. Johnson (Savannah) 14, Jenkins 8: Johnson ended a seven-game losing streak against its Savannah rival, which was a 22-point favorite. Four of Jenkins’ victories during that stretch were by 45 points or more. Johnson improved to 1-2 this season. Jenkins, which leads the series 28-19, was 12-2 and a Class 3A semifinalist in 2019 but is just 5-6 since.

4. McEachern 42, Hillgrove 14: McEachern, a 13-point favorite against its Powder Springs rival, won by 28, the most-lopsided victory by either team in the history is the series, which is tied 6-6. Hillgrove had won three of the previous four. Hillgrove is 0-3 for the first time since it lost all three games against a non-region schedule in its inaugural season of 2006.

5. Greene County 16, Hancock Central 14: Greene County avenged a 42-3 loss in 2020 against Hancock Central, which was a 27-point favorite but playing its first game. Hancock Central went on to win its first-ever region title last season Greene County was a region champ and Class A Public quarterfinalist in 2018 but went 3-16 over the past two years.

Worth noting: Campbell, a one-point favorite, beat Woodstock 21-7 to reach 3-0 for the first time since 2006. That 2006 team, coached by Kyle Hockman, went 9-3 and lost in the second round of the playoffs to eventual co-champion Peachtree Ridge 16-14. … Dougherty is 3-0 for the first time in 16 years after a 10-7 victory over Northeast, an 11-point favorite. Dougherty’s last 3-0 start came in 2005, when the Trojans went 13-2 and lost to Peach County in the Class 3A championship game. … North Springs ended an 18-game losing streak that was the third-longest in school history with a 13-9 win over Woodland (Cartersville), which was a 10-point favorite. Two weeks ago, Woodland lost to 28-point underdog Osborne. … West Forsyth is ranked for the first time since 2012 after beating 12-point favorite Walton 51-35. West Forsyth has won two of three in a season-opening stretch of four games against ranked teams (it plays 7A No. 3 Mill Creek this week).
