Seth Reeves likes his position after shooting 1-over 72 in the first round of the U.S. Amateur on the Atlanta Athletic Club’s Highlands Course on Monday.
“You can’t win the tournament on the first day, but you can lose it when you only have 36 (holes),” Reeves, a former standout at Georgia Tech, said.
Reeves has reasons to be confident: he’s hitting the ball well and he gets what to play what is considered to be the easier of the two courses on Tuesday.
He made two bogeys, with a birdie and five lip-out putts or chips.
“I could have been 2 under,” he said. “It’s a game of inches, I guess.
Reeves will next take on the Riverside Course, a track he said he loves.
“I can shoot 4 or 5 under and be fine,” he said.
Despite the lipouts, Reeves said he likely wouldn’t spend much time practicing Monday afternoon because he wants to stay fresh.
“It’s a marathon and I fully expect to be playing a lot,” he said.
