Patrick Reed’s troubles continue at East Lake Golf Club.

Reed shot a 3-over par 73 on Thursday in the opening round of the Tour Championship. It was his seventh over-par round in nine at the tournament, the finale of the FedEx Cup playoffs, in the past three years.

Reed entered the Tour Championship in second place in the point standings. He is one of the five who control his own fate, win the Tour Championship and win the FedEx Cup. However, Reed has slipped to fourth in the projected standings after the opening round.

In 2014, Reed finished tied for 19th with rounds of 67-74-74-69 on the par-70 layout. In 2015, he finished 27th with rounds of 72-74-77-71.

Reed opened with two bogeys to start his round Thursday. He never recovered. There was some good news when Reed chipped in from 46 feet off the No. 14 green for a birdie. The shot ended a run of three straight bogeys.
