Conners, ranked 44th in the Amateur rankings and the Mid-American Conference Co-Player of the Year out of Kent State, won his last two matches 3-and-1 and 3-and-2. Olsen, 147th in the world, appearing in his second consecutive U.S. Am match play, went 5-and-3 and 4-and-3 Thursday.
Nathan Smith, 36, Pittsburgh, Pa. vs. Frederick Wedel, 19, Roseville, Calif. Tee Time 11 a.m.: It is the first time in the quarterfinals for Smith, in his 14th U.S. Amateur appearance. He is a well-seasoned amateur having won four U.S. Mid-Amateurs and been a member of three Walker Cup teams. Wedel, a rising junior at Pepperdine has made it far in his first U.S. Amateur. Neither player is in the top 600 in the world rankings.
Roman Robledo, 21, Harlingen, Texas vs. Denny McCarthy, 21, Rockville, Md. Tee Time Noon: A meeting of the top two ranked players left in the field (McCarthy 36th, Robledo 43rd). A senior at Virgina, McCarthy already has played in six U.S. Ams. This is the first time he has gotten beyond the round of 64. Robledo, a senior at Houston, tied for 19th in this year's NCAA tournament. A second team All-American.
