Jason Day, from time to time, does something not so smart.
And his left knee lets him know all about it.
Day hit his second shot into the par-5 sixth hole at East Lake Golf Club during the third round of the Tour Championship on Saturday. Despite the uphill shot, Day was all-too eager to get a peek at where the approach shot landed.
So, he jumped to get a view. Big mistake.
Day immediately grabbed his left knee upon the landing and grimaced in pain. He then walked to the green with a noticeable limp.
“Every now and then it feels like it kind of pops on me,” Day said. “I’ve got tears in both MCLs in my knees so if I do something silly like that, it usually kind of pops back. It normally just stings and kind of goes away. I’ve been in a non-contact sport and I don’t really have to move laterally or kind of forward and try and dodge someone that’s trying to tackle me so I’m actually okay with it.”
Day went on to birdie the hole after his approach shot landed just short of a green-side bunker. It was his fourth straight birdie and Day found himself in contention for the FedEx Cup playoff finale title. The limp would eventually go away and he would post another birdie and a bogey before a double-bogey on the 16th hole left his 2-under par on the day and 6-under par on the tournament. Day is tied for seventh but six strokes behind leader Paul Casey going into the final round Sunday.
