Tech safety Kagawa likely to play as freshman

Aug 26, 2014

Add Georgia Tech safety Shaun Kagawa to the list of incoming freshmen who are expected to play this season. Coach Paul Johnson said Monday that Kagawa will probably play this season, mostly on special teams.

“He’s just a good athlete, runs around, makes some plays,” Johnson said.

Kagawa was the last to join Tech’s 21-member freshman class. He was at Army’s prep school for one semester before leaving, then signed with SMU before being released from his letter of intent due to admissions issues. With recommendations to Johnson from SMU coach June Jones, Kagawa committed to Tech in May.

Johnson also said Monday that he counted eight or nine true freshmen who will probably play this season. One guess: cornerbacks Lance and Lawrence Austin and Step Durham, offensive linemen Trey Klock and Andrew Marshall, defensive linemen KeShun Freeman and Tyler Merriweather and Kagawa. Other possibilities: Wide receiver Qua Searcy, B-back C.J. Leggett and linebacker Terrell Lewis.
