Georgia Tech cornerback Louis Young will be held out of the Sun Bowl for disciplinary reasons. Coach Paul Johnson did not elaborate on the nature of the transgression.

The Yellow Jackets will have to face Utah without a linchpin of their defense. Young played both cornerback and nickel back and rarely left the field. He is tied for fourth on the team with tackles with 52.

In a Tweet sent out Monday, Young said, "I'm young and I made a bad decision and I will grow from this situation. I'm humbled but I'm not defeated by it."

Every other team member is expected to make the trip. Johnson said that it's possible Young's discipline may extend past the bowl game.

"It could be, but we'll see," he said. "For now, he's not eligible for the bowl game."

Jemea Thomas will replace Young in the starting lineup. The likely replacement for Thomas as the No. 3 cornerback is either Jamal Golden or Mike Peterson.

"We've just got to move on," cornerback Rod Sweeting said. "Players that were second or third on the depth chart, they have to move up and fill the role and just play."

Draft evaluations

Guard Omoregie Uzzi and wide receiver Stephen Hill both submitted paperwork to be evaluated by the NFL draft advisory board. The board, made up of NFL scouts and officials, gives players with remaining college eligibility an appraisal of their draft standing. Requesting an appraisal is separate from entering the draft.

A-back Orwin Smith and cornerback Rod Sweeting did not request evaluations and said they will return for their senior seasons. Uzzi and Hill also intend to return but left open the possibility of entering the draft.

If he were told he had a first-round standing, "I'd definitely look into it," Uzzi said.

Tickets

Tech has sold 3,700 Sun Bowl tickets out of its 8,000-ticket allotment. About 1,800 of the purchased tickets will be donated to soldiers at Fort Bliss near El Paso, part of a goodwill effort that Tech is encouraging fans to participate in. Tickets are available at ramblinwreck.com.

Etc.

Hawaii will not bring in wide receivers coach Buzz Preston to interview for its head coaching vacancy, Preston said Monday. A Hawaii grad and former assistant, Preston called it his dream job. "That's the way it goes," he said. … Tech will have its final on-campus bowl practice Tuesday, after which players will be released for the holidays. They will have off until the 26th, when the team will re-convene in Atlanta and fly to El Paso.
