Georgia is largely a veteran football team heading into the 2014 football season, but freshmen and first-year players are expected to be well-represented in opening game.
Bulldogs coach Mark Richt confirmed Tuesday that at least a half-dozen first-year players are slated to see action against Clemson, including local products Lorenzo Carter of Norcross at outside linebacker and Dominick Sanders of Tucker at defensive back.
“Looks like Sanders will play, those two tailbacks will play (Nick Chubb and Sony Michel), (tight end Jeb) Blazevich will play. … McKenzie will get in the game and play,” Richt said.
Much of Georgia’s youth is in the secondary. Junior college transfer Shattle Fenteng and true freshmen Rico Johnson and Malkom Parrish are listed in the defensive backfield’s two-deep.
But just because the Bulldogs are young doesn’t mean they won’t be good, Richt contended.
“A lot of young guys come through,” he said. “… We’ve had a lot of young receivers come in and make big plays and we’ve had running backs come in as freshmen. Walkon Tra Battle, some years back, came in and started at nickel and had a great freshman year. It’s not all that unusual to have freshmen come in a play well for you.”
