Indications are that Georgia Tech defensive tackle Patrick Gamble will play Saturday against Clemson, which would fortify the Yellow Jackets defense against the No. 6 Tigers. Gamble has missed the past two games with a head injury.
“He had a very good practice,” defensive coordinator Ted Roof said after Tuesday’s practice. “It was good to have him back.”
Coach Paul Johnson said that wide receiver Micheal Summers has a chance to play. Summers, the most experienced receiver on the roster by far, has also been out the past two games with a shoulder injury.
Gamble can slide back into the rotation at tackle with Jabari Hunt and Adam Gotsis. The Jackets struggled defending the run and pressuring the passer with both Gamble and Gotsis out of this past Saturday’s loss to North Carolina. Gotsis was disqualified from the game for a targeting penalty early in the second quarter.
Gamble’s return “can have a big impact,” Roof said. “He was a guy that was starting to play really well (prior to the injury).”
Roof said that the tackle rotation will be expanded to include Francis Kallon and Kyle Cerge-Henderson. Kallon played extensively after Gotsis’ ejection and Cerge-Henderson played his first snaps as a first-year freshman.
“He got his feet wet a little bit last week, and he’s going to get them soaking wet this week,” Roof said of Cerge-Henderson.
Summers’ return would also be a lift for the Jackets. Summers was showing a connection with quarterback Justin Thomas when he was injured in the Notre Dame game. Summers has five catches for 74 yards with two touchdowns.
