An online fund set up to defray funeral costs for Georgia Tech signee Bryce Gowdy had collected more than $10,000 in a matter of hours Monday evening.

As the tragic news of Gowdy’s death spread on Monday, a GoFundMe account set up to help cover funeral costs was created and quickly supported.

"We are overwhelmed with the support and care everyone has shown as his spirit still lives within everyone he has touched," a message on the donation page read. "We are in great need of assistance paying for all funeral costs and services."

By Tuesday morning, donations had surpassed $15,00 from more than 350 donors, according to the page, nearing the $20,000 goal.

Gowdy, a highly-regarded wide receiver prospect from Deerfield Beach, Fla., died after being struck by a freight train in Deerfield Beach early Monday morning. He was to begin classes at Tech Jan. 6.
