Former Georgia Tech A-backs coach Lamar Owens has been hired at Georgia Southern as a wide receivers coach, a person familiar with the decision confirmed. The hire was reported earlier Tuesday by ESPN.

Owens was not retained after working nine seasons for former coach Paul Johnson as A-backs coach and serving as a staff assistant the two previous years. He also added the titles of special-teams coordinator (2016) and recruiting coordinator (2017).

As A-backs coach, he helped develop players such as Roddy Jones, Orwin Smith, Robert Godhigh and Clinton Lynch. He was also an effective recruiter for Tech, particularly working the Savannah and Jacksonville, Fla., areas.

He is the third assistant on Johnson’s staff known to have secured a position. Safeties coach Shiel Wood and defensive coordinator Nate Woody are the others. Wood is inside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Georgia State and Woody has accepted an off-field role at Michigan.
