Georgia hires former Alabama aide as ‘director of player personnel’

Georgia’s subtle transformation of its football recruiting operation continued Monday as the Bulldogs announced they hired Ronnie Letson as “director of player personnel.”

Letson comes to UGA from Samford University in Birmingham. He had been the wide receivers coach there since February. Before that he was an “offensive analyst” among the vast pool of quality control assistants at Alabama.

Georgia did not have a player personnel director previously. Letson effectively replaces Darryl Jones, who resigned as on-campus recruiting coordinator last month.

“Ronnie has a vast wealth of knowledge in both on-field coaching and organizational skills that will be a great asset to our program,” coach Mark Richt said in UGA’s news release. “His career has been spent in the Southeast and he knows the landscape of college football.”

A native Atlantan and graduate of Norcross High School, Letson was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Jacksonville State University from 2004 to 2012. He was an offensive and defensive graduate assistant at Ole Miss from 2003-04 and coached the wide receivers at Presbyterian College from 2002 to 2003. He began his coaching career as the wide receivers coach at Jacksonville State from 2000 to 2002.

Letson was a three-year letterman at Ole Miss before graduating in 1999. He and his wife, Vanessa, have two sons, Tripp and Eli.
