Navy football will look ship-shape for its annual Army Navy Game Saturday.
The powerhouse team will be wearing new "Navy Fleet" uniforms and helmets that pay tribute to the country's sailors and Marines, Navy Sports announced.
Looking at the details from Under Armour, the company that designed the new look:
- The uniform's font matches the design found on Navy ships.
- The color on the cleats, base layer sleeves and jersey shoulders is battleship gray.
- The eagle, globe and anchor Marine Corps logo will be on the uniform's pants.
- "Damn The Torpedoes!" rally cry from the U.S. Naval Fleet will be written on the uniform pant and jersey hem.
The most striking feature will be new, hand-painted helmets, each showing a ship that is matched to a player's position on the field.
Linebackers will have a cruiser. A cruiser "provides anti-air defense and packs the biggest punch of Naval surface ships."
Defensive backs will wear destroyers. The ships are "known for significant fire power, speed, and anti-missile defense."
Wide receivers will have submarines. Wide receivers are "predominantly utilized as blockers, wide receivers play a key role in driving the Navy rush attack, taking on a stealth-like persona as they blend into the rhythm of the offense, but bring significant fire power when called upon, just like a Naval submarine," Navy Sports reported.
Linemen will wear amphibious assault ships. The ships "are utilized to establish the 'beach head' that enables the invading force to gain access and ultimately accomplish their objective."
Quarterbacks are the aircraft carriers. Carriers are considered the "quick strike" weapon of the fleet and is the "ultimate decision maker."
Running backs are the littoral combat ships. The ships can weave through "crowded shallow and deep water" like RBs.
Kicker and special team members will wear minesweepers. The small ship has a special mission to find and eliminate mines.
Navy has the lead in the annual game between the academies, with a record of 59-49-7 over Army.
