University of Miami linebacker Denzel Perryman was in a yellow, limited-contact jersey for Wednesday’s practice while he recovers from a right ankle injury and his status for Saturday’s game against Virginia remains in question.

“Right now it’s somewhere between probable and doubtful,” coach Al Golden said. “If I was going to guess, it would be doubtful right now.”

Perryman was in a similar situation before last week’s game against Virginia Tech. He was limited in practice and on game day he tested his ankle and played a few snaps before leaving the game.

Asked if the same scenario could take place this week, Golden replied, “He’s played enough that you give him the benefit of the doubt. But we have to be smart that we don’t go backwards (with Perryman’s health) down the home stretch.”

With Saturday’s game being played on the road, a decision on Perryman will be made sooner than a home game. Golden has said he doesn’t want players traveling if they have no shot of playing.

“If they’re close, a guy like (Perryman) who has a lot of experience and a lot of reps built in, you would give him more of a benefit of the doubt than someone who has no experience or has played very little and probably wouldn’t be able to handle the game plan without actually practicing every day,” Golden said.

• Golden ruled out starting safety Deon Bush from playing Saturday. Bush sustained a head/neck injury against Virginia Tech.

• Freshman receiver Malcolm Lewis has been granted a medical redshirt this season after suffering a season-ending injury at Georgia Tech.

Recruit backs out: South Plantation High School running back Alex Collins, ranked No. 147 among the nation's top prospects by ESPN , has decommitted from the Hurricanes. Collins said he will continue to consider Miami but is also looking at FSU and Wisconsin.
