Florida State’s defense has been helped by the play of four true freshmen who have shown they are learning coordinator Mark Stoops’ schemes and have been rewarded with increased playing time.
Linebacker Reggie Northrup, who had committed to Miami before signing with FSU, had six tackles in Saturday’s win over Boston College. Defensive back P.J. Williams had four tackles and a tackle for loss. Cornerback Ronald Darby has eight tackles and has broken up four passes and forced a fumble. And Mario Edwards Jr. has slimmed down and is beginning to work into the rotation at defensive end.
“If you’re the best player, you play,” coach Jimbo Fisher said of playing true freshmen. “I don’t have any problem with that.”
The four defensive players were part of a recruiting class that was considered among the top 10 in the nation.
Injury update: Former Glades Central standout Kelvin Benjamin and Kenny Shaw had the flu and were not able to practice earlier this week, but Fisher said that both are feeling better and will play against Miami on Saturday night.
Sunshine excellence: Fisher took over as FSU's coach in 2010, and since then the Seminoles are 5-0 against the state schools. FSU is 2-0 against Miami and Florida and also beat South Florida this season.
