Expect the Hawks to add at least one more player to their roster before the start of training camp next month, according to a person familiar with the situation.
The Hawks have 17 players under contract and can add up to three more players to reach the league maximum of 20 players for camp. The Hawks would like to add a point guard and perhaps another front-line player to the preseason roster.
The Hawks must trim their roster to 15 players before the start of the season.
Last season, the Hawks had a training camp roster of 19 that included the partial or non-guaranteed contracts of Terran Petteway, DeQuan Jones, Earl Barron and Edgar Sosa. They added Arsalan Kazemi after the start of workouts.
One possible training camp addition could be Bryce Cotton. The point guard played well on the Hawks’ entry in the Las Vegas Summer League last month. Cotton appeared in five games and averaged 12.8 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 19.6 minutes. He missed one game with an ankle injury. Cotton has 23 games of NBA experience in stints with three teams (Jazz, Suns and Grizzlies) over the past two seasons.
The Hawks are scheduled to begin training camp with a media day on Sept. 26 followed by three days of workouts at the University of Georgia.
