Braves will limit Flowers’ consecutive starts during McCann’s absence

Cole Tyler Flowers was born Jan. 24, 1986 in Roswell, Georgia. Flowers graduated from Blessed Trinity Catholic High School in Roswell and Chipola Junior College in Florida. The Braves drafted Flowers in the 33rd round of the 2005 draft. He was the 1,007th player drafted. Flowers made his major league debut Sept. 3, 2009 for the White Sox against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. He was used as a pinch hitter. Flowers recorded his first big-league hit Sept. 19, 2009, a single off Victor Marte. He walked off Dusty

The Braves will limit catcher Tyler Flowers’ starts to two or three games in a row while Brian McCann is on the injured list, manager Brian Snitker said Thursday.

The two veteran catchers have shared the position this season, McCann playing in 73 games (239 at-bats) and Flowers in 66 games (216 at-bats).

Flowers, 33, started Wednesday and Thursday and also caught the final six innings of Tuesday’s game after McCann left with a sore left knee. Rookie Alex Jackson, promoted from Triple-A Gwinnett to replace McCann on the roster, will start Friday’s game against the Mets in New York, Snitker said.

“No more than two games in a row, maybe three in a row, that would be the tops (Flowers) would do,” Snitker said.

The Braves could be able to add another veteran catcher soon. The Pirates announced Thursday that they placed Francisco Cervelli on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Cervelli has his eyes on a major- or minor-league deal with the Braves once he clears waivers.

McCann was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with what Snitker called a strained ligament.
