Braves’ Swanson leaves game after he’s injured by throw

Sept 13, 2016

Braves rookie shortstop Dansby Swanson left the game against the Marlins Monday after he was injured by a thrown ball during warm-ups prior to the start of the fifth inning.

Swanson was standing behind the mound when a throw from catcher Tyler Flowers got past pitcher Ryan Weber and hit Swanson. The Braves said Swanson suffered a bruised right groin.

“That’s unfortunate but you don’t stand behind anybody when they are playing catch.,” Braves interin manager Brian Snitker said. “It got him good, too. I think he will be all right.”

Snitker said Swanson wasn’t able to continue playing. Gordon Beckham replaced Swanson in the lineup.

Swanson is the top-rated prospect in the Braves’ organization. He’s started 20 games since the Braves promoted him from Double-A Mississippi following their trade of shortstop Erick Aybar to the Tigers.
