Braves infielder Phil Gosselin will have surgery for a fractured left thumb and miss about eight weeks, the team said Monday.
Gosselin suffered the injury while diving to make a play on a ground ball during Sunday’s game against the Marlins. The Braves said Gosselin suffered an avulsion fracture, which occurs when a small piece of bone attached to a tendon or ligament is separated from the main bone, and will have surgery on Wednesday.
The Braves placed Gosselin on the 15-day disabled list. They are promoting infielder Adonis Garcia from Triple-A Gwinnett to take Gosselin’s place on the 25-man roster.
Gosselin, 26, is hitting 13-for-40 (.325) with a .357 on-base percentage. He’s started seven of 20 games played with time at second base and third base.
Garcia, 30, ranks second in the International League in hits (47), doubles (11) and batting average (.351). He has yet to play in the majors after leaving Cuba and singing with the Yankees in 2012.
