Atlanta United and Emerson Hyndman are discussing a contract, but the terms haven’t been finalized, according to a person familiar with the situation.
An Atlanta United spokesman declined to comment, citing the team’s policy of not discussing players who aren’t under contract with the team.
Hyndman, a 23-year-old central midfielder, is a native of Dallas who played in FC Dallas’ academy before he signed with Fulham in England in 2010. He made 25 appearances with Fulham from 2014-16. He was purchased by Bournemouth in 2016. He went on loan to Rangers in Scotland in 2017, where he made 13 appearances, and then went on loan to Hibernian in Scotland in 2018, making 15 appearances. He has less than five appearances with Bournemouth.
He has two appearances with the U.S. men’s national team and several with the youth national teams.
Hyndman likely would provide cover for Darlington Nagbe and Julian Gressel in central midfield.
Atlanta United has two roster spots open, but neither are on its 20-man senior roster, which means the team may need to make another move to open a spot should it reach an agreement with Hyndman.
Atlanta United is thin at midfield because of ligament injuries sustained by Hector Villalba and Ezequiel Barco, and a muscle injury sustained by Kevin Kratz.
The MLS summer transfer window will open July 9.
