With Sunday’s news that starting shortstop Ha-Seong Kim will be on the shelf for the next few months, the Braves announced Monday they have signed infielder Jorge Mateo to a one-year contract.

Mateo is a five-year MLB veteran who made his debut with San Diego in 2020 and has spent the past four-plus seasons with Baltimore. He is a .221 career hitter with a .266 on-base percentage.

The addition of Mateo provides the Braves depth on the field with Kim out until at least May. Offseason signing Mauricio Dubón will be in position to be the team’s starting shortstop at the open of spring training.

Mateo has 294 career games at shortstop, having made 263 starts at the position. He has 13 defensive runs saved at the position, according to Baseball Reference. In 2022 with Baltimore, Mateo drove in 50 runs and stole 35 bases.
