The huge express toll lanes project under construction along I-75 and I-575 in Cobb and Cherokee Counties is taking shape before drivers’ eyes on pace and on budget, according to state transportation officials.
Drivers may notice several new signs identifying the $834 million project known as the Northwest Corridor and letting people know how to get more information about it. Active construction began last fall and is currently concentrated at the I-75/I-285 interchange; at the Hickory Grove Road and I-75 intersection; near the Canton Road Connector (Ga. Highway 5); at Barrett Parkway and I-75; and at the I-75/I-575 interchange. About half of the project will be elevated above ground level.
Crews are building 29.7 miles of reversible toll lanes along I-75 from Akers Mill Road to Hickory Grove Road, and along I-575 from I-75 to Sixes Road. Two lanes are going up along the west side of I-75 between I-285 and I-575. North of that interchange, one express lane will run along I-75 north to Hickory Grove Road and one express lane will continue along I-575 to Sixes Road.
The lanes should open on schedule in the spring of 2018, said John Hancock, the Northwest Corridor Project Manager for Georgia Department of Transportation.
“Everything is going great,” Hancock said. “We have great activity and we are making great progress.”
