As Hurricane Irma moves closer to U.S. states along the coast, government officials have been urging locals to evacuate.

Savannah is one of those areas, and luckily, special needs residents have been able to leave the city with the help of some local volunteers and a slew of buses.

Those who cannot travel to inland shelters on their own have been heading to the evacuation assembly areas in order to get to safety.

“I’m very grateful for them helping us get out of dodge,” Crystal Russell, a Savannah resident told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Because of me being in my chair, I can’t use my legs, so they are getting me a new bus that’s better for my knees.”

Organizers will be moving people on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m and on Sunday from 8 a.m. until the last evacuee boards or until weather permits.

Up to 3,000 people are expected to leave Savannah on buses.

Donald Trump's administration deployed the military to Washington, D.C., in the name of fighting crime, and in an Aug. 11 news conference he mentioned the possibility of military being sent to other large American cities, all of which are led by Black, Democratic mayors. And while Atlanta wasn't included in Trump's list, the city fits that profile under Mayor Andre Dickens. (Photo Illustration: Philip Robibero / AJC | Source: Getty)
