A woman who police said attempted to drive away from a hit-and-run scene Tuesday afternoon in DeKalb County was killed moments later when her vehicle struck a utility pole.

Officers responded to the fatal crash on Briarcliff Road near Lakeside High School about 2:30 p.m., DeKalb police spokeswoman Michaela Vincent told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Police said the woman, whose name was not released, hit another vehicle “without stopping.”

As she tried to drive away, she ran into the utility pole and suffered fatal injuries, Vincent said. The other driver suffered only minor injuries.

Police and firefighters could be seen investigating the crash at the high school’s entrance near the intersection of Briarcliff and Oak Grove roads. Briarcliff Road was temporarily shut down as the fatal crash was investigated, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

DeKalb officials did not say if anyone from the school was involved in the wreck.

No further details have been released, but Vincent said the investigation is ongoing.
