A hiker was found dead Friday evening after seeking help for her injured boyfriend along a popular Dawson County trail, officials said.

A couple in their 20s were hiking at Cochrans Falls when the man injured himself shortly before 4:30 p.m., Dawson County fire Chief Danny Thompson told reporters.

Rescue crews located the man about 90 minutes later, and he told them his girlfriend left to find help.

One search group worked to rescue the man while a second group searched for the missing woman, Thompson said. Her body was discovered about 7:15 p.m. at the bottom of the falls.

“The falls obviously go up into the mountains,” Thompson said at the news conference. “The elevation is almost 2,000 feet and she was located down in the bottom area.”

The man was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with injuries to his head, back and knee, officials said. Authorities have not said exactly how his girlfriend died, and the couple’s names have not been released.

The investigation was turned over to the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office.
