The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office and the GBI have identified the woman killed in an officer-involved shooting after a domestic incident Monday.
Julia Anne Moss, 40, of Athens, was fatally shot when she charged at deputies with a knife after they begged her to put it down for more than 15 minutes, according to both agencies.
The incident happened about 10:15 a.m. at a home on Creekview Court off White Oak Drive in Athens, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.
A man living in the home called 911 after Moss hit him in the head with a pipe and stabbed a dog, according to the agency. He said she was a guest who had spent the previous night at the residence.
When deputies arrived at the scene, Moss had the knife and a blowtorch, GBI spokeswoman Natalie Ammons said in a separate statement. Moss was in an apparent manic state, prompting deputies to call for medical assistance, according to the sheriff’s office.
“Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation for approximately 17 minutes,” Oconee officials said.
Deputy Swisher deployed a Taser as Moss charged toward deputies, and Cpl. Henderson fired multiple shots, according to the agency. Deputies performed CPR, but Moss did not survive. She died at the scene, Ammons said.
No deputies were injured. The man who was hit in the head was treated at the scene. The dog was taken to a veterinarian and later released to its owner. Another person at the home who barricaded himself in a bedroom during the ordeal was not hurt.
This incident was the 72nd officer-involved shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate this year. It was the first of two deadly shootings involving a Georgia law enforcement officer in a span of about nine hours Monday.
A police officer shot and killed a man who approached her with a gun outside a southeast Atlanta apartment complex about 7:25 p.m., authorities said.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also tracks officer-involved shootings that don’t involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the state agency’s tally.
