One month after she was hired as assistant solicitor for Sandy Springs, Jeannine Malone has resigned amid the publicity surrounding her husband, who was arrested last fall on federal drug charges.
In September, Thomas W. Malone Jr. pleaded guilty in Federal District Court to charges of conspiracy to distribute a dangerous controlled substance, synthetic marijuana, through his Alpharetta business, NutraGenomics. He is scheduled to be sentenced later this month.
Sandy Springs officials learned late last month that their assistant solicitor was married to a convicted felon after they were notified by a Breman man who has conducted his own investigation of NutraGenomics. Lance Dyer has pursued the company since March, when his 14-year-old son committed suicide after taking a synthetic drug.
Jeannine Malone was sworn in as assistant solicitor on Dec. 3, equipped with a resume that included graduating cum laude from Georgia State Law School, clerking for Fulton Superior Court Judge Ural Glanville and serving as assistant district attorney for DeKalb County, where she ran a trial division at Recorder’s Court.
Sandy Springs Solicitor William Riley, who says he has known and respected Glanville for more than 20 years, said he hired Malone when he found that she was available from one of his junior prosecutors.
“Last week, she informed us she had some personal problems, and she turned in her resignation on Jan. 1,” Riley said, adding that he passed an order withdrawing her appointment on Wednesday.
Sandy Springs city attorney Wendell Willard said Malone was asked to resign, according to Channel 2 Action News.
