A Westlake student is fighting for her life after surviving a wreck that killed her best friend over the weekend.

Koryn McLeod, 16, is in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital, her mother told Channel 2 Action News on Monday. The girl’s best friend, Myka Roberts, 16, died in the crash, according to a news release from Fulton County police.

“They left my house and three minutes later, this happened,” Toni McLeod said.

The girls were out celebrating the upcoming school year, McLeod told Channel 2.

According to Cpl. Kay Lester, Fulton County police spokeswoman, the wreck happened around 10 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Cascading Lane and Cascade-Palmetto Highway. The 2003 Jeep Liberty that Roberts was driving left the roadway and hit a tree, according to Lester.

Both girls were transported to Grady, where Roberts died from her injuries.

A vigil was held at Westlake High on Monday night.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, Lester said.
