More than 20 people were on board a boat that was returning from a whale-watching tour when a grey whale breached, hitting the boat.
“The captain had to make a movement to avoid a whale that surfaced just in front of the boat,” a statement said. “The whale hit one side of the boat,” it continued. “Leaving two people injured and another passenger hurt who, unfortunately, later died in the hospital."
The statement says the Canadian tourist was thrown into the water by the force of the impact.
The Guardian reports Cabo San Lucas port director Vicente Martínez confirmed the incident occurred "on the Pacific coast side of the Baja California Peninsula."
Whale watching is a key tourist attraction in Cabo San Lucas. The Mexican government says this has been a banner year with a large number of the huge mammals in the area.
