Austin police have arrested a woman on felony charges after tracing her to a robbery on Tuesday through her own 911 calls, in which she complains about how employees treated her at the store she is accused of robbing.
Police have accused Kristin Carlton of hitting an employee of the Family Thrift Center with a car as she fled from the East Oltorf Street business with clothing she shoplifted. Carlton, 57, is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, her car being the weapon, police said.
According to police, Carlton attempted to leave the store, but the employee stood in front of Carlton’s car to get the license plate number. Carlton then sped forward and hit the employee, police said.
The employee was taken to St. David’s South Austin Medical Center but later released, police said.
Later, Carlton called 911 twice to complain about being accused of shoplifting at the Family Thrift Center and how employees treated her there, police said. In both calls, she refused to identify herself.
However, information obtained through 911 records allowed investigators to identify Carlton as the caller and led them to records of her current employer. There, police found a vehicle that had front-end damage consistent with damage created after hitting a person, police said.
Carlton later confirmed that she had called 911 about her treatment at the Family Thrift Center and that she had gone to the business during her lunch break, police said.
Investigators asked for anyone who may have witnessed who observed the crime to call the Austin police robbery unit at 512-974-5270.
