That sun finally shining in metro Atlanta? It’s only temporary, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan.

After patches of fog blanketed the region Wednesday morning, triggering a freezing fog warning, Monahan said many are getting a welcome break from the gloom and gray.

“We’ve got some temporary breaks in the fog and clouds around parts of metro Atlanta — but clouds will roll back in later today as an upper level disturbance moves in,” Monahan said.

Cloud cover is hard to shake this time of year, he said, because of the position of the sun in the winter sky.

“The sun is just so low in the sky, it takes so much energy to burn off that fog,” he said.

Monahan said he was expecting North Georgia to get at least a few more hours of sunshine Wednesday after limited glimpses of sun Tuesday, but that no longer appears to be the case. Once that upper level disturbance sweeps through the region, Wednesday will be “the same old story” as the past couple of days, he said.

“We’ll call it a mostly cloudy day for your Wednesday,” he said. “We’ll be in the upper 40s to about 50 degrees.”

Atlanta’s projected high is 48 degrees, according to Channel 2.

Monahan said he is looking to Thursday for some more sunshine, and for things to warm up. Metro Atlanta is still in line for temperatures to make the climb up into the mid-50s, and some neighborhoods could make it to the upper 50s, he said

North Georgia should stay pretty dry through Friday, which has a 20% chance of a shower as a cold front comes through, according to Channel 2. Monahan said freezing temperatures and lingering moisture in the forecast for the weekend could mean a few snow flurries.

Temperatures remain at the freezing point Wednesday, but metro Atlanta is no longer in danger of fog freezing on elevated surfaces, making roadways slick.

There are delays out of the northern suburbs as the Wednesday morning drive winds down, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

In Cobb County, a crash on I-75 South at Windy Hill Road was blocking all but one left lane at 9:30 a.m., the Traffic Center reported. Commuters can take U.S. 41 out of Marietta.

In North Fulton, roadwork was blocking two left lanes on Ga. 400 North at Northridge Road and causing heavy delays getting into Sandy Springs. The Traffic Center suggests using Ga. 9 instead.
