For the first time this week, there is a better chance of sunshine than showers in the forecast.

That’s not to say North Georgia will be totally dry Wednesday, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. Showers and storms will be more scattered than the first two days this week, resulting in better chances to get outside and enjoy the final days of summer vacation.

“Still, we’ll keep an eye out for those darker clouds to fill in and some showers and storms to develop, but there are not going to be as widespread,” Monahan said. “Still a ton of humidity, still a chance for storms, just fewer of them as we head through the day today, and we’re really going to start to dry out in time for the weekend.”

The same front that brought rain Monday and Tuesday is still draped across the region. It is producing clouds and showers on Wednesday morning, with most of the activity concentrated north of I-20.

Rain is 40% likely the rest of the day, according to Channel 2. The same scattered pattern continues Thursday and Friday before showers are expected to turn more isolated for Saturday and Sunday.

Two-thirds of the days since June 1 have seen some form of rain, Monahan said. Atlanta has recorded about 11.5 inches of rain in that time, nearly 4 inches above average rainfall.

“I do think we’ll see more peeks of sun today than yesterday,” he said. “We’ll be in the mid-80s. Mid- to upper 80s Thursday and Friday, then the heat builds for the weekend.”

With fewer showers around Saturday and Sunday, Monahan expects temperatures to reach the 90s both days.

Despite a few showers, most metro Atlanta interstates are moving along fine at the start of the Wednesday morning rush. However, there are building delays on I-75 in Cobb, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

A crash with debris is blocking lanes on I-75 North at the North Marietta Parkway Loop, the Traffic Center reported at 6:40 a.m. Northbound commuters should use U.S. 41 to get into Marietta, according to the Traffic Center.
