A vehicle with a 91-year-old driver behind the wheel plunged into a creek in east Cobb, authorities said Monday.

Cobb hazmat crews were called to the scene near Casteel Road and Oak Lane because oil from the vehicle leaked into the creek, Officer Mike Bowman with the Cobb County Police Department told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

According to Channel 2 Action News, the 91-year-old driver pulled in front of another vehicle, collided with that vehicle, and went down a hill and into a creek.

“The water was about 10 inches deep,” Lt. Dan Dupree with Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services told the AJC. “Luckily it wasn’t too bad. He rolled the window down himself and crawled out with our assistance.”

Authorities helped the man walk up the bank before taking him to WellStar Kennestone Hospital as a precaution.

“I don’t think he was complaining of anything,” Dupree said. “I’m assuming it was as a precaution because of the distance the car went, landing in the cold water and his age.”

The truck was pulled from the creek just before 1 p.m., according to Channel 2.

Dupree was not sure how much oil leaked into the creek, but said it was “a very small quantity.” Officials put booms across the creek to halt the spread of the oil, Dupree said.
