Metro Atlanta is making a return to summertime heat Tuesday as temperatures climb into the mid-80s, according to Channel 2 Action News.

By Thursday, temperatures in the city could get close to 90 degrees. If you’ve felt shortchanged by the brief taste of fall weather, you’re not alone. Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan calls the first chilly days of the season “fake fall,” and it’s fairly common at this point in the year.

The cooler weather will return, he said, although it could take a few weeks to really settle in.

“But the humidity is going to stay comfortable over the next couple of days,” Monahan said. “Really not until mid- to late October do we get that final fall push of the year that sets us up for the cooler months.”

Temperatures are in the low 60s in Atlanta start Tuesday, with a few areas of patchy fog. Eventually, the sun will burn away the clouds and the city will warm to a projected high of 85 degrees, according to Channel 2.

Monahan expects the afternoon to be dry and partly to mostly sunny. There should be no weather issues for the morning drive, the lunch hour or the evening drive, he said.

“Once we pass sunrise this morning, just a few fair-weather clouds this afternoon,” he said. “We’re looking great. Eighty-one is our average high, and we’ll be above that this afternoon in the mid-80s in Atlanta.”

Monahan said humidity will be slightly higher Tuesday than the day before, but it should not be too noticeable. While higher humidity will factor into the forecast for the rest of the week, Monahan it won’t necessarily be a “summertime mugginess.”

“That is going to stay to the west all the way through the weekend,” he said of the more tropical conditions. “That means we stay dry into Saturday and Sunday.”

High temperatures will drop back into the lower 80s by the weekend, but Monahan is not expecting another stretch of morning lows in the 50s for some time.

With no weather concerns and no longstanding crashes, there is nothing standing in the way of a smooth Tuesday morning commute, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

Traffic reporter Heather Catlin said “it is a great drive this morning” on the Downtown Connector at 6:30 a.m.

Volume is expected to build throughout the morning. In Cobb County, roads could get congested before the start of the Braves series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies. First pitch is scheduled for 7:20 p.m., and the weather should cooperate.

Dry conditions and temperatures in the 70s should see baseball fans all the way through to the ninth inning, according to Channel 2.
