Steady rain is falling all across metro Atlanta for the start of the morning drive, with the heaviest downpours soaking the Southside.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said Tuesday morning would see “the heaviest and steadiest” rain before it eases up a bit for the afternoon. While showers and storms eventually become more scattered, Monahan said there is no opportunity Tuesday to do away with the umbrella and rain gear.

“Keep it handy for the next couple of days,” Monahan said. “By the weekend you can get rid of the umbrella for the most part, but through Friday were going to see good chances of rain across North Georgia.”

Steady rain was falling in downtown Atlanta on Tuesday morning, where a city dweller crossed Peachtree Street to Woodruff Park under the cover of an umbrella.

A flash flood watch is in effect for most of the region through late Wednesday night. The National Weather Service expects widespread rainfall totals of 3 to 5 inches, with higher amounts possible in the northeast Georgia mountains.

More than an inch of rain has already fallen this week at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, according to Monahan. That’s a third of the average 3.28 inches of rainfall for the entire month of October, which Monahan said is typically Atlanta’s driest month of the year.

Rain will continue in waves throughout the day Tuesday, keeping Atlanta cooler with a projected high of 73 degrees, he said. With a weather system stalled to the west, Monahan expects more of the same the next three days.

“This upper level low is just not going anywhere,” he said. “What that’s doing is just pulling and scooping this tropical moisture in our direction. It’s going to keep us wet off and on.”

Multiple crashes have been reported on the wet roads Tuesday morning. While most have cleared quickly, the wrecks are adding to growing delays all across metro Atlanta, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

Trip times are growing in both directions on the Downtown Connector, and the trip northbound from Langford Parkway to 17th Street was a slow 25 minutes at 9 a.m., the Traffic Center reported.

Conditions are also getting worse on the Perimeter, where the Traffic Center reported the ride from I-20 to I-85 on the Eastside was taking drivers more than 30 minutes.
