North Georgia is certainly cold Tuesday morning, but it is also clear with few clouds in the sky.

Clear conditions will mean sunshine later Tuesday, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz. There is no rain in the forecast.

“Temperatures are heading toward a high only of 50 degrees,” Nitz said. “We’re going to enjoy sunshine today, and that means dry pavement for our morning commute.”

Temperatures are in the upper 30s in metro Atlanta to begin the day, but most areas outside the Perimeter are at or below freezing. Nitz said a heavy coat, hat and gloves are warranted early on, but only sunglasses will be necessary for a chilly but sunny Tuesday afternoon.

“You can leave your umbrella at home,” Nitz said. “We’re dry today.”

The dry conditions will be short-lived, he said. Rain returns to the forecast Wednesday, and some areas of the northeast Georgia mountains could get freezing rain overnight, according to Channel 2.

Light freezing rain is a possibility “mainly above 2,500 feet,” Nitz said. “For the rest of us, including all of metro Atlanta, no ice but just some wet weather through noon tomorrow, and then we’ll all dry out through the afternoon.”

Nitz said accumulations of ice will be less than one-tenth of an inch, but it could make for slick spots on bridges and overpasses in the mountains. A winter weather advisory has been issued for Rabun County, which is scheduled to go into effect at midnight and expire at noon Wednesday.

Atlanta is expected to stay above freezing Wednesday with a projected low of 36 degrees and a projected high of 47, seven degrees below the average high temperature for this time of year.

In terms of moisture, Wednesday should be the outlier. Sunshine and dry weather are in store for the rest of the week, according to Channel 2.

Travel conditions on Tuesday morning are pretty near ideal. Despite some predawn crashes, there are no major delays to begin the morning rush, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

“We’re off to a great start,” traffic reporter Ashley Frasca said.

At 6 a.m., there are no delays on I-285 around the city, according to the Traffic Center. The inner loop is clear through Fulton and Cobb counties, and Frasca said it is a speed-limit ride on the outer loop through Spaghetti Junction in DeKalb County.
